Vitamin D regulates hundreds of genes in the body and is responsible for functions in almost all body systems. It is not for nothing that it was referred to in a 2017 publication as a "survival molecule".

The meaning of vitamin D for our body
Many people do not know how important vitamin D is for the human organism. Vitamin D is not only connected to the regulation of the immune system in our body, but also has a targeted effect on infectious diseases and autoimmune diseases. There are also relationships between vitamin D status and the occurrence of diseases such as Alzheimer's dementia, heart disease, (pregnancy) diabetes, asthma and cancer.
Sufficiently supplied with vitamin D?
80-90 % of the population are currently under-supplied with vitamin D, especially in winter.
Since we now spend most of the time in closed rooms, our body produces significantly less vitamin D than before - with serious consequences for the health of those affected.
A study with 11- to 13-year-old Viennese schoolchildren shows that even at the end of summer only 10 % of children have a normal vitamin D level> 30 ng/ml. In the following winter months, this proportion drops to below 1 %.
We are currently unable to estimate what this fact means for the health of the population in the long run, since there was no such thing in the past.
Measurement of the vitamin D mirror
According to Prof. Spitz, the target value of the vitamin D level in healthy adults is between 40 and 60 ng/ml. Some further examinations speak for a value between 50 and 80 ng/ml. However, this is higher than most reference values of the laboratories. It is recommended at least 2 times a year to lose weight in the blood or to send them via a blood drop test. In the meantime, test sets are also available online.
If a measurement is not possible for certain reasons, an alternative can alternatively be considered to be safe daily (at 70 kg body weight), provided that there are no vitamin D metabolic disorders.
